| Over het wijnhuis | Het wijnhuis Il Poggione is gesitueerd in een van de mooiste terroirs in de wereld, op de heuvels rond Montalcino. De geschiedenis van Il Poggione gaat terug naar het jaar 1890, wanneer Lavinio Franceschi, grondbezitter in Florence, besluit een wijnhuis op te richten in Montalcino. Hij gaat daar wijnen maken van de lokale Sangiovese-kloon Brunello en is daarmee een van de eerste wijnmakers die de wereldberoemde Brunello di Montalcino, zoals we die nu kennen, in de markt lanceert. |
| Wijngaard en regio | De druiven zijn afkomstig van de oudste wijngaarden van het wijnhuis in Montalcino. De gemiddelde leeftijd van de stokken ligt tussen de 25 en 40 jaar. De wijngaarden liggen op 150 tot 450 meter boven zeeniveau. De hoogteverschillen zorgen voor koelte, wat gunstig is voor de ontwikkeling van de zuurgraad. De druiven worden met de hand geplukt. |
| Vinificatie | Na de oogst volgt een schilweking van 15-20 dagen om kleur, smaak en tannines te onttrekken. Daarna worden de druiven op gecontroleerde temperatuur vergist in RVS. Na de vergisting rijpt de wijn 30-36 maanden in grote foeders van Frans eikenhout van 33 tot 52 hl. Daarna rijpt de wijn nog zo'n 12 maanden in de fles, voordat deze op de markt wordt gebracht. |

| Awards | "The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage, yet this is just a baby today." - Vinous "The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows an evolved bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flower and autumnal leaf. Sant'Angelo in Colle, which suffers in warmer vintages, performed very well and Il Poggione is a great example of the harmony of the area's wines in this vintage. Fruity at first sniff, it becomes more restrained later, with black cherry, violet, leather, graphite vibrancy and its typical nutty finish. The chalky tannins are extracted but velvety, underlined by an almost zesty acidity." - Decanter "Features ample plum, cherry, iron, tobacco and underbrush flavors buoyed by a plump texture to match the dense structure, plus vibrant acidity to keep it all focused.
