Awards "Complex nose of blackberries, currants, oyster shells, iodine, gravel, cloves, dried leaves and bark. Medium-bodied with firm, very fine tannins. Layered and serious. Extremely long in the finish. Classic Pauillac. 20% aged in concrete. 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2026.' - James Suckling

"Busy and expressive on the nose with vineyard-fresh dark fruit, black-olive and mineral notes. Juicy and fresh on the palate with a fine grain of tannin behind. Not the power and stuffing of top Pauillac but good length and definition. Best in recent years. (JL)" - Jancis Robinson

"The 2019 Haut-Bages Libéral is a gorgeous wine from Claire Lurton, even if it has closed down a bit post-bottling. Deep and translucent in feel, the 2019 gradually reveals hints of crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, rose petal and orange peel. I especially admire the overall energy and aromatic presence. All the 2019 needs is a few years to fully come together." - Vinous

"The 2019 Haut-Bages-Libéral has turned out superbly, offering up aromas of wild berries, cassis, licorice, rose petals and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate, its powdery structuring tannins hidden in an ample core of lively, succulent fruit. From biodynamically farmed vineyards located on clay-limestone and gravel soils to the north of Château Latour (as well as a parcel of gravel sandwiched between Pichon-Baron and Lynch-Bages), this is a terrific effort from an estate that deserves to be much better known." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a Bordeaux producer in the Pauillac appellation, and one of the 18 estates deemed a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification of the Médoc and Graves. It makes Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant red wine of the same name.

Its name references the site of the château on top of the small Bages plateau that falls between the communes Pauillac and Saint-Julien. It is also named for the Libéral family, multi-generational négociants who owned the property in the 18th Century, and helped establish the reputation that made it a classed growth.

For a number of years the wines were made at neighboring Château Pontet-Canet when both properties were owned by the Cruse family. In 1982 the Cruse family sold Libéral to Jacques Merlaut who was the head of the Taillan Group. Taillan owns several other Bordeaux estates, which are run by members of the Merlaut family, notably Château Chasse-Spleen and Château Ferrière. Merlaut's granddaughter Claire Villars-Lurton now manages both Ferrière and Haut-Bages Libéral.

The modern estate is 30 hectares (74 acres), planted roughly with 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 percent Merlot. Besides its grand vin, Libéral makes a second wine from its younger fruit and which is bottled under various labels such as La Chapelle de Bages and La Fleur de Haut-Bages Libéral. The second wine varies by vintage, but can have a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend compared to the grand vin.

Tasted by Jane Anson(at Bordeaux, 09 Jun 2020) Part of Best Pauillac 2019 wines tasted en primeur:

Clear muscles on display, speaking to Pauillac. Real depth of flavour also, with a sense of energy and forward motion through the palate, filling out with cassis fruits alongside liquorice root and a clear saline lick on the end of play. Ageing takes place in a mix of barrel and amphoras as with Ferrière, including new amphoras that are made in Limoges and have a porcelain-lined interior. First year officially certified Ecocert. 3.6pH. A yield of 49hl/ha.

James Suckling - 95 / 96: The cabernet sauvignon is coming out beautifully here with a full body and very polished, chewy tannins. Chocolate, walnuts and spice. Full and racy with wonderful length and purity. Classic style. From biodynamically grown grapes. Juin 2020
