Tasted by Jane Anson(at Bordeaux, 08 May 2020):Medium to full intensity inky purple colour, an excellent Glana and one to recommend for medium-term St Julien pleasure. Pretty broad shouldered, as this wine often is, with clearly defined strands of blueberry and blackberry fruits, alongside slate and crushed stone to add restraint and texture. Chocolate dusting on the finish.

Château du Glana is an estate situated in the prestigious Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Julien in the Haut-Médoc. The 60 hectares (148 acres) of vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller quantities of Merlot, which form the backbone of the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon-predominant grand vin, Château du Glana.

The château was constructed on the "Route des Grands Vins" opposite the renowned second growth estate, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, in 1870. Initially Château du Glana comprised 5ha (12 acres) of vines and, after a series of owners and vineyard extensions, the property was acquired by Gabriel Meffre in 1961. Under his supervision the vineyard hectarage increased further to 43ha (106 acres) with several key purchases that included parcels from the nearby third growth estate, Château Lagrange.

The Meffre family is still at the helm today, with Jean-Paul and his two sons Ludovic and Julien leading the management of the château and its vineyards. They have undertaken extensive renovations at the estate, which have included the restoration of the vat room and wine cellars.

Approximately 65 percent of the vineyards are devoted to the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, while the remaining 35 percent is set aside for the growth of Merlot. These vines average 25 years old and are planted in Garonne gravel soils.

Each plot of vines is managed individually and, after harvest, the grapes are fermented under temperature-controlled conditions. Cold maceration follows, with 3 weeks vatting time in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels (with varying percentages of new oak depending on the vintage) to age for 12 months. Annual production levels of the grand vin reach roughly 120,000 bottles, but a portion of the estate's total production is also dedicated to the making of its second wine, Pavillon du Glana.

Chateau du Glana 2019:

Quite, Quite simply, a very good vintage Early bud break due to the mild winter slowed down vegetative growth, letting flowering take place in cool weather with no significant effects on the future harvest. The summer was exceptionally hot, leading to significant water stress in the vines, but this was limited by much-awaited rainfall! Therefore, ripening was not halted, conducive to quick and homogeneous véraison (colour change). Thanks to a dry, warm and sunny month of September, the grapes gradually developed good colour and tannin potential characteristic of a very fine vintage. “The 2019 vintage at our estates is once again in line with some of the greatest. Even though the vines experienced significant water stress, this did not halt ripening. Wines from this vintage have a high alcohol content, but nevertheless present an impressive fruitiness and a beautiful tannic structure, resulting in a well-balanced blend thanks especially to the remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon

James Suckling: 92-93/100 Very pure fruit here with aromas and flavors of crushed blueberries and raspberries. It’s medium-bodied and fine-tannined. Fresh finish.

Decanter - Jane Anson : 92/100 Medium to full intensity inky purple colour, an excellent Glana and one to recommend for medium-term St Julien pleasure. Pretty broad shouldered, as this wine often is, with clearly defined strands of blueberry and blackberry fruits, alongside slate and crushed stone to add restraint and texture. Chocolate dusting on the finish. 2026-2042.

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss : 92/100 The wine’s structure is very evident at this stage in its evolution. While that indicates fine aging potential, it also contrasts well the the elegant black fruits and final freshness.

Chris Kissack - WineDoctor : 90-92/100 An often overlooked estate in St Julien, despite its proximity toseveral famous names. Dark, glossy and concentrated in the glass, with a crimson-black hue. The nose holds some promise, with smoky currant and blackcurrant, with a touch of bay leaf. The palate shows a broad and supple substance, quite generous and welcoming, with a firm and fine grip. Texturally very complete, with seamless substance, a ripe and tightly knit curtain of tannins, with a saline and peppery energy to it all. Really complete and energetic in the finish, with a good length. This has promise.

Adrian Van Velsen: 90-91/100 Rouge rubis intense. 2024-2035

Falstaff: 92/100 Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, dezenter Ockerrand. Reife Pflaumen, eingelegte schwarze Kirschen, zarter Nougattouch, frische Mandarinenzesten.
